Brandywine River Museum U.S. Route 1, Chadds Ford PA 19317 610-388-2700 Relax and enjoy the exhibits in a 19th century grist mill, set along the banks of the Brandywine River.  The museum houses the premier collection of three generations of the Wyeth Family; Nathaniel Converse Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth and Carolyn Wyeth.  The museum is internationally known for its unparalleled collection of illustration, still life and landscape paintings. Tour the museum open daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, closed Christmas Day or the N.C. Wyeth Sudio, open seasonally.

 

Hagley Museum Route 141, Wilmington DE 19807 302-658-2400 Hagley is the birthplace of the DuPont Company (Eleutherian Mills) built in 1803 by E.I. DuPont on 230 acres.  The Georgian-style residence and gardens sit on the banks of the Brandywine River within walking distance from the black power factories.  It features the original DuPont mills, estate and gardens, interactive science exhibit (museum), machine shops, Blacksmith Hill worker's community and the DuPont automobile, once the most expensive car in the world.  Regular Hours - March 12, 2005, through December 31, 2005: Open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Winter Hours - January 1, 2005, through March 11, 2005: Open weekdays for one guided tour at 1:30 p.m. Open weekends - 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Longwood Gardens U.S. Route 1, Box 501 Kennett Square Pa 19348 610-388-1000 A world premiere horticultural display garden created by Pierre S. DuPont on 1,050 acres.  Dress comfortably and enjoy a four acre conservatory, exquisite flowers, ancient trees, opulent architecture, spectacular seasonal events and displays.  The fabulous fountains should not be missed.  Open everyday and many evenings, two restaurants, gift shops and picnic facilities.  Allow 3 to 7 hours to visit. 

 

Nemours Mansion and Gardens 1600 Rockland Road, Wilmington DE 19807 800-651-6912 Alfred I. DuPont's modified Louis XVI French-style chateau (built between 1909 and 1910) contains 102 rooms and is located on a 300 acre country estate.  The 47,000 sq.ft. mansion is furnished with fine examples of antique furniture, rare rugs, tapestries and outstanding works of art set among spectacular formal gardens.  Also you will able to see the various utility systems of the house, many designed by A.I. DuPont.  The tour takes about 2 hours.  Advance reservations required. Opens May 1, 2008.

 

Winterthur Museum and Library Route 52 (Kennett Pike) Wilmington DE 19735 302-888-4600 Winterthur is one of a few surviving great American country estates built by Henry Frances DuPont.  Early American decorative art objects and antiques (1640-1860) are displaying in 175 rooms.  Discover an incomparable blend of beauty and history as you; enjoy the garden tram (operated March thru December), 60 acre garden, with azaleas and rhododendron, the Enchanted Woods (a fairy tale garden for children of all ages), a nationally acclaimed research library, Campbell Soup Tureen collection, highlight tours (approx one hour, reservations required), fantastic gift shops and restaurant.  The Museum and Garden is open Tuesday-Sunday from 10 am-5 pm.  Closed Mondays (except holidays), Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Chanticleer Gardens 786 Church Road, Wayne PA 19087 610-687-4163 A 35 acre pleasure garden featuring lush courtyards of tropicals, perennials and containers, vegetable garden, exotic woodlands, ponds and water gardens.  Open April 1 through October 30, 2005.  Wednesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.  The garden will be open until 8pm every Friday, May through August.

Jenkins Arboretum 631 Berwyn Baptist Road, Devon PA 19333 610-647-8870 Plants are marked for a self-guided tour through a spectacular collection of azaleas, rhododendrons, and wild flowers preserved in a natural Pennsylvania woodland setting with unspoiled vistas.  Jenkins Arboretum is open to the public 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset.

Tyler Arboretum 515 Painter Road, Media PA 19063 610-566-9134 Tranquil 650 acre historic arboretum with collections of native state champion rare trees, natural areas with 20 miles of hiking trails and unique plant collections.  Open daily at 9am, closing times vary.

American Helicopter Museum and Education Center 1220 American Blvd. (near Brandywine airport off Airport Road), West Chest PA 19380 610-436-9600 Come fly away and visit growing exhibitions and collections of over 35 helicopters that show the past and future of rotor wing flight.  Also, see autogiros and converti planes, eight of which you can climb aboard and have a hands on interactive experience.  Helicopter rides the third Saturday of every month, April thru November.  Open Wednesday - Saturday from 10am to 5pm.  Sunday from noon to 5pm. Monday and Tuesday open by appointment only.

 

The Barnes Foundation 300 North Latch's Lane, Merion PA 19066 610-667-0890 Mission: "The mission of The Barnes Foundation is to promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of fine arts...to maintain an art gallery of works of ancient and modern art, in connection with an arboretum...for the study of arboriculture and forestry." Albert C. Barnes.  Hosts one of the finest collections of French early Modern and Post-impressionist paintings in the world.

Brandywine Battlefield U.S. Route 1, Chadds Ford PA 19317 610-459-3342 The small museum has artifacts that bring the Battle of the Brandywine to life.  Self tour of the campsites of General George Washington's colonial troops plus tour Washington's headquarters and the Marquis de Lafayette's quarters.  The Visitor Center sells a map (driving tour) of the battle area.  The self driving tour is about 2 hours.

Chadds Ford Historical Society 1736 Creek Road 1/4 mile North of Route 1, Chadds Ford PA 19317 610-459-3342 The focus is on colonial life in 18th century Chadds Ford.  Exhibits are in the Bar Visitors Center; it maintains two historic houses (John Chadd House and Barn-Brinton House) and hosts many events.

John Chadds House Creek Road (formerly Route 100), Chadds Ford PA 19317 610-388-7376 This house was built in 1725 by John Chadd, a farmer and ferryman for whom the town, Chadds Ford was named!  The John Chadd House is open weekends May through September, 1 pm to 5 p.m.

Barns-Brinton House U.S. Route 1, Chadds Ford PA 19317 610-388-7376 An early 18th century tavern authentically restored as a living history museum.  The Barns-Brinton House is open weekends May through September, 1 to 5 p.m.  A $5 admission is good for John Chadd House and Springhouse, Barn Visitors Center and the Barns-Brinton House.

Christian Sanderson Museum   Creek Road (formerly Route 100), Chadds Ford PA 19317 610-388-6545 Sanderson's unique small house filled to the brim with a lifetime collection of artifacts, Wyeth artwork and memorabilia.  Hours are from 1pm to 4:30pm Saturday and Sunday.  For other times, please call for an appointment.  Donations appreciated.

Read House and Gardens 42 The Strand, New Castle, DE 19720 302-322-8411 This beautifully restored Federal mansion was built in 1801, in colonial New Castle by the son of one of Delaware's signers of the Declaration of Independence.
